Introduction

In a world often clamoring for attention, where the loudest voices often dominate conversations about sustainability, there exists a powerful yet understated force: quiet sustainability. This concept emphasizes the importance of small, consistent actions that collectively create significant positive change for the environment and social connections.

What is Quiet Sustainability?

At its core, quiet sustainability is about mindfulness and intentionality. It’s about brands that are willing to share the truth about how much of their products are created sustainably, and how they plan to continue improving in this direction. Quiet sustainability refers to the brands that have slowly incorporated sustainability into their production line without making a fuss about how sustainable they are in order to make a profit, even when their products are not selling.

Furthermore, quiet sustainability is inclusive and adaptable. It recognizes that not every aspect of the fashion industry can automatically become sustainable but can be improved to cater environmentally and socially to its consumers.

Taking Accountability.

The fashion industry is being held to account for its sustainability claims, following the fines and de-accreditations of major brands in previous years. Following these issues which led to consumers losing confidence in the brands, sustainability developments are slowly and quietly taking place in fashion houses and independent labels.

For example Chloé’s SS22 collection was revered for its responsible production and use of its low-impact materials. In October of 2021, the French fashion house was also awarded a B Corp status, an accreditation given to companies with very high levels of environmental and social accountability.

The B Corp certification was a step towards a quiet revolution in luxury fashion. Chloé was showing other brands what long-term ethical, social and environmental responsibility could look like on and off the runway, without shouting it from the rooftops.

What does quiet sustainability mean for consumers?

Embracing quiet sustainability fosters a sense of empowerment. It reminds consumers that they have agency and influence, no matter how small their individual actions may seem. By making conscious choices aligned with their values, they become catalysts for positive change, inspiring others to follow suit.

Moreover, quiet sustainability is not limited to individual actions; it extends to communities, organizations, and beyond. When like-minded individuals come together with a shared commitment to sustainability, they amplify their impact exponentially. Whether it’s advocating for policy changes or supporting grassroots initiatives, collective action drives meaningful progress.

So, as we navigate our daily lives, let’s embrace the power of quiet sustainability. Let’s strive to make choices that honor the planet and its inhabitants, not with grand gestures, but with quiet resolve and unwavering commitment. Together, through collective efforts, we can create a more sustainable and harmonious world for generations to come.
